ADOM is a good example of a roguelike that doesn't take long to learn and one that's still actively being developed. Personally, ADOM and ToME are my two favorites. ADOM doesn't have so many class skills like ToME does, but each class gets (usually) passive class powers every 6 levels. It's free and worth checking out.
